November 1998

The 2nd International Software Quality Week Europe, held 9-13 November 1998 in Brussels, showed growth in numbers and quality over the prior event. With over 60 papers and around 250 attending, QWE'98 got very strong positive reactions from all of the attendees.

Special credit for the event's success goes to to Rose Malinao (left), QWE'98 Executive Director Rita Bral (center) and QWE'98's 5-language-speaker and local assistant Stephanie Van Quanthem (right) who kept the "behind the scenes work" well in hand.

QWE'98 began with two days of full-day and half-day tutorials. Here are photos of some of the Tutorial Speakers. Tom Drake (Managing Quality in Object-Oriented Software), Boris Beizer (An Overview of Testing; Testing and Y2K), Martin Pol (Test Process Improvement), Suzanne Robertson (Making Requirements Testable, Ed Kit (Automated Software Testing and Reviews), Dot Graham (Software Inspection), John Musa (More Reliable, Faster Cheaper Testing with Software Reliability Engineering).

Software Research, Inc. sponsored the QWE'98 Welcome Reception, held in the Maison de Brasseurs (House of Brewmasters, two of whom are pictured here) at the Grand Place in Brussels. As you can see, this was a pretty enjoyable event , particularly with the expert advice of John Musa, widely known Wine and Beer critic.

Exhibits included a range of software product and service companies. There was an Exhibitor Sponsored Cocktail Party on Wednesday evening. All conference 3-course lunches were held in the Horizon Room at the Sheraton, with a commanding view of Brussels.

A highlight of the QWE'98 conference was the pair of book signings with Boris Beizer and with John Musa and Martin Pol.

The conference voted on the papers and the QWE'98 Best Paper Awardee was Ms. Monica Bobrowski (left) for her presentation of A Software Engineering View of Data Quality with co-authors Ms. Martina Marre and Mr. Daniel Yankelevich. The QW'98 Best Paper Awardee, Mr. Jim Clarke (left), gave his QW'99 paper to the European audience.

TestWorks users can now download a new release of TCAT/C-C++ for Windows 95/NT, Ver. 2.1.

TCAT/C-C++ is fully integrated with Microsoft Visual C/C++ 5.n. All actions needed to obtain a coverage report can be done entirely within the Microsoft Visual C/C++ environment.

This release also includes extensions of the source viewing capability, stronger integration between CallTree, Digraph, and Coverage reports. Complete details -- including a Quick Tour showing sample screens -- can be found in the Product Release Notes

Software Magazine (published by the Sentry Technology Group) has included SR in the 1998 Software 500 -- see the printed June 1998 issue of the magazine. Marking the 16th consecutive year of publishing their ranking of the "...best, brightest and most successful [companies] in the software industry", the Software 500 list includes "...solid providers of enterprise-level software...". We are pleased to be included the second year in a row, and equally proud to have advanced five ranks from our position in 1997.

TestWorks users can now download a new release of CAPBAK/MSW for Windows 95/NT, Ver. 3.2. Complete details can be found in the Product Release Notes.

CAPBAK/MSW is optimized to help testers generate compact, reliable tests with the least possible work. CAPBAK/MSW Ver. 3.2 accomplishes this by attempting all recordings in ObjectMode and automatically reverting to the universal and highly reliable TrueTime mode with Automatic Output Synchronization (AOS) when the user's actions make an ObjectMode recording impossible.

CAPBAK/MSW's goal is to always produce a test that has a very high chance of running reliably and effectively without any human intervention. (Editing of recorded scripts for special effects is particularly easy because the scripts are expressed in "C".)

The 1997 Embedded Systems Programming Subscriber Study lists SR/TestWorks with a major share of the embedded systems test support market, according to Thomas Vilms, Senior Contributing Editor at Embedded Systems. This ranking is based on use of TestWorks coverage tools in a cross-testing or host/target testing applications in which runtime test coverage data is collected from a target and imported to a host for analysis.

Java $50 Prize Test Coverage Contest (Through 15 July 1997). We are running a special contest, with a $50 cash prize, to help people test their Java testing skills on the WWW with TCAT for Java! For this contest you must play J-Othello, a TCAT-instrumented Java application you run from that WebPage. It shows your current test coverage live on the screen.

SR will pay $50 to the highest-scoring game screen and corresponding coverage report we receive by FAX to +1 (415) 957-0730 before 12:00 PDT on 15 July 1997. The contest winner will be announced the next day! In case of a tie, the earliest arriving entry wins.

Use any test methods you want to maximize your C1 (segment) and S0 (method) coverage values. To win you must FAX a printout of your screen with the J-Othello game and the coverage value showing on the screen. Use xwd or xv on UNIX or PRNT-SCRN on Windows to save/print your screen. Don't forget to include your name and postal address (so we know where to send your $50). Please label your FAX: Java Contest Entry!

HINTS: There are 373 segments and 46 methods in J-Othello. It is fairly easy to exceed 300 segments/40 methods executed. For a winning entry you may have to remember to try all the buttons on the screen, to run the game to the end, or to force your opponent (the Java program) to PASS.

CAPBAK/MSW Ver. 3.1 -- including fully integrated ObjectMode, TrueTime, and OCR support -- is now available for download. Click here to read a Specification of the CAPBAK/MSW C Language Interface.

You can now Check Out TCAT for Java on Standard Game Software by playing instrumented versions of Java implementations of TicTacToe and J-Othello that report coverage values direct to the screen. CAUTION: Our staff has found J-Othello quite difficult to beat!
